A lesson for parents & teachers

Quick Review

Classy and charming. Composed and elegant. Aamir Khan delivers his first baby with élan. The hard labor shows in a compassionate portrayal of a sensitive issue.

Rating: Must see - on the big screen (Rating Scale)

How can one not love a movie about children crafted with utmost compassion - children with special needs at that? But, is that the only reason I liked Tare Zameen Par? Maybe - maybe not. What I know for sure is that a strong one-line story is narrated extremely charmingly. It is truly uplifting when spirit wins and yet, it is not all about the spirit of winning.

Tare Zameer Par is about a child who suffers because no one around him recognizes that he is a slow learner. The beauty of the narration is that the message applies to all children - learning disability or not. How can creativity not deserve a place in academics? It also points a very subtle finger at how we build conformation in our system right at the roots.

The pace of the first half gives you time to think of normal children who are just not academically inclined. The resolution in the second half, however, comes by too quickly compared to the trauma shown earlier. But, I guess, if the point is to show that difficulties can be overcome, you don’t necessarily want to show how difficult it is to overcome them.

About 45 minutes post-interval, Darsheel Safary (Ishaan) said a line which made me realize that he hadn’t said a line in the last hour or so. There I was feeling sorry for Ishaan, feeling like yelling at someone to give him a big hug while I fought this lump in my throat that had been there for the longest time. All this based solely on Darsheel’s expressions and body language!

Kudos to the director for taking this decision and many such with brilliant confidence. And, finally we have a dialogue writer who knows when not to give the actors a helping hand. There are a couple of verbose, preachy scenes. But, they made the point because they were well written.

Aamir Khan’s entry into the movie seemed over-the-top and forced, mainly because it was in absolute contrast with the tone of the movie thus far. But after a little while you realize that you can’t distinguish between the actor/director Aamir Khan and his character Nikhumb. They are both fighting the same cause. Passionately. The other characters serve their purpose as caricatures - stereotypical father, loving mother, understanding sibling, ruthless teacher, and jeering peers.

No matter who or what the focus of the camera is, the love it feels towards its subjects shows in each frame. And, in turn, you fall in love with what you see on screen. Compositions, lighting, angles, colors all work successfully together to engross you and very often to enchant you. The lingering camera might have added a good 10-15 minutes to the run-time. But you will be hard-pressed to point out exact scenes which the movie could have done without. Everything is building character or atmosphere or both.

The songs too contribute to the narrative. The lyrics are sheer poetry. I know-I know, that’s what they are supposed to be, but can’t remember the last time lyrics brought me to tears. “mein kabhi batlaata nahi” kept me speechless (and we all know how difficult that is!). And rock-style guitar strumming to a kids’ song - that’s what I call creative.

Yes, that dash of seemingly inevitable melodrama exists. The side-characters transform for no apparent reason. The climax is exaggerated and is as unrealistic as it could get. However, the aim is to show not reality of life but reality of the condition that this child suffers from. Once you get that, you pardon the make-up a mother is wearing at 6 AM while doing her chores. And anyway, most of this is towards the end, by which time you are willing to forgive. Because, above all else, it makes you think.

When did we grow up? When along the way did we forget what it felt like to be yelled at, to be put down, to be ridiculed? And why did we choose the next generation for revenge? Will we recognize the child in us that is struggling to get out? Will the sensation that the lump in the throat created, stay after the credits roll?

I agree with almost everything you’ve written in the review, except that I did not feel it was lesson for parents and teachers only. It’s a BIG lesson to everyone; just accept each other for who and what they are…I am good, so are you!

I am all praises for Aamir Khan. Oh! and Darsheel Safary too, but I guess it takes a good director to create good actor out of a kid, so, the credit goes to Aamir again.

This was one movie that made me cry, like *really* feel and cry. And I mean it in the best sense (I was happy watching the film). The emotions were portrayed SO well!

The movie is simply outstanding. Music is just appropriate. For all of those who are trying to critically judge the movie and are trying not to over-rate the movie, should just chill out for sometime and keep their comments for the “other commercial cinema”. This moive is simply outstanding and deserves a huge applause, plain and simple. Aamir Khan has made the Indian cinema proud.

    Hi all,
    TZP Really touched my heart,

The day next i saw the film the child mischif and the sarrow used pass my mind every now and then,

This story is a kind of similar to my life,

I belong to a middle class family from …

Because i too had school fobia in my child hood,
Yes i was a really bad at reading and playing games like other kids,

I belong to a middle class family,
I used to hate school and i left home for 8 months i travelled all of india with out money,

Luckely i came back to home and
my old school throwed me out then i got in to new governament school where i felt i am better than most of childrens,
I saw my school mates who are worste than me and teachers did not had much issuee with me,

Just like the kid i was suffering ,
But here no amir kan in my life ,
I felt i am good as the governament school,
Thanks that i found my luck and i was thrown out of english school,

They used to beat like dogs and cats,

    Its a very big story,

Every teacher should know that children are not slaves,
And parents should understand childs difficulty insted of beating them like dogs,I know every teacher cant affort time for every body but a little change in all teacher can bring up the kids,

    I found my way,

Yep i passed SSLC which no one would have ever thought off who knew me,

    Now i am 26,
And working as a software engineer in a MNC,
Today i solved a bug so i have free time to write on this blog,

But there are 1000 like me,

I may not visit this blog again in my lifetime,

But my message to all viewers of this blog,

Please if u ever get a chance to be a part of teacher or in feture ur kid might have a poor learning skill like that child ishan,
please understand them and try to give them love and never break the confidence in such a way bring them.

    Thank your for reading,

And Special thanks to amir for his time and effort to bring a good story,

    TC
    Bye
    Love you all,

    > “mein kabhi batlaata nahi” kept me speechless

Same here. I too can’t remember the last time when the lyrics made me cry. Each and every sentence of all the songs is so appropriate it actually justified the use of Songs in Bollywood Movies ;)

Just there is this feeling of incompleteness. Everyone is praising Darsheel, Aamir, Prasoon… but people are not talking much about Amole. That mysterious controversy between him and AK is also cause of my sympathy for him. In spite of being AK’s great fan I feel very sorry for Amole. And I hope this great guy will be able to direct his next film :-)

Renuka(critic of timesgroup) must take rest, have a good sleep ..feel fresh and then watch the movie. Write a review only if you understand what you are talking about! In the whole movie you felt that the director is only trying to create awareness about “Dyslexia”? How poor imagination of a Movie Critic!! Haven’t you seen your childhood in the movie, haven’t you realized that how mechanical the modern parents are, haven’t you realized that loss of emotion of a small child after getting detached from his parents in a forceful manner? Renuka, you need a brake, I am sorry to write that you have a learning deficiency too and that is due to lack of emotions… look back at your childhood you’ll find out the cause of the damage. Good Luck!

To be honest, I have almost never written a review for a move! But this make me go out take the effort to write one, It is THE best movie I have seen. I am a part-time social worker, so this movie touches me more! I used to write b as d, and vice versa. In the character of the father, I see my own father. Believe me it causes more pain than one can ever imagine!

If someone has not seen this movie, I would personally recommend them to see the movie. I have saving this movie for ever in my heart. I hope this movie gets nominated for Oscars, it truly deserves it by all means! Previous movies by Aamir Khan do not compare one bit to this! Truly this is THE best movie I have seen, I cannot repeat it again! I really hope all of the world does not miss it. It has one of the most strongest messages that I have seen in Indian movies.

I see myself in this movie! I think that teachers in India should pay more attention to their students at an early age and show them a way instead of put pressure on them and push them to a corner in the rat-race of life! It is a pity that I had to go through that I hope this movie convinces that both parents and teachers and more so the society pays attention to small children to avoid such mishaps! I does cause a large impact to a child and his future.

“3 Tickets?Taare Zameen par,” I asked at the Advance Booking counter.A

at the poster and predicted,”Mast timepass rahegi!”.Hmmm..I
thought..Should I also take Welcome?Who wants to get bored for 3 hrs
anyway?By the time I could decide, the counterwalla had the tickets
ready for me.Disappointedly I paid and said to myself,”Chal na.Iske
    baad Welcome dekh lenge”.

The introduction started with jumbling letters and a colourful
animation. Then I saw water. And a face. Face with a focused
look..innocently sticking his tongue out in concentration. His aim?
    Kidnap fishes from the gutter.

    I think I had moist eyes.Was I seeing the 8-yr old…ME? For the next
2.5 hrs I had frequent chocking lumps in my throat with an inability to
breathe properly. Sounds like torture. But Felt like magic.. :)

I think by this time we all know what the movie is all about. And also
its flaws-thanks to some _____(don’t know what) out there in the world
who don’t have enough capacity to enjoy anything fully.

I am writing this column only for those who pointed out flaws in the
movie.I have a question for you guys.

How many movies have you so
    critically-intellectually-arrogantly-insensitively analysed? Or should
I ask,”How many movies have you even analysed?”.This movie has got even
the non-writers writing for it,discussing the
angles, quality, direction, scene details and what not.Can you think why?

I didn’t find any interesting blog discussing about the technical details
of OSO,Welcome,Partner etc etc..What is making us discuss so much about
    TZP guys??

Its the impact that the movie made on you.The tears which were rolling
down your eyes..the helpless expressions of Ishaan which forced you to
introspect..and probably the overly critical nature of his father and
    teachers..which you want to defend.

TZP is above any criticism or any cynic who knows the price of
everything and the value of nothing(thank you Nikumbh Sir). You guys
criticized the movie for being slow,Amir crying too much, having seen
    some empty beds,oversized clothes,unnecessary songs…How come you TZP-critiques forgot
to criticize Ishaan’s father? How come you guys forgot to criticize the
way his art teacher punished him?How come you guys forgot to criticize
the sports teacher for fairing pathetically at the painting
    competition??

Probably because these people reflect a little of you all…

Get a life friends. If you keep judging TZP,you’ll have no time to love
    it.

On a light note..What if I had been razor sharp to stop that
counterwaala from tearing the tickets and had instead taken the tickets
    of Welcome???? Sigh…

    Taare Zameen Par.

A movie which made me realise that

Sometimes in life,it is healthy to be slow and dumb.

the movie deals with a subject tht our society shuns to talk abt but is a very necessary one as many children these days r suffering from this problem
parent’s and teachers both shuld take it as a challenge instead of running from it as amir khan says in the movie tht he knows the symptom but the parents need to find out wht is the cause of those symptoms
the movie went straight to my heart as i had some similar experiences while dealing with my brother
    the direction is supurb
the new boy darsheel has done pure justice to his role

Hey Good Lord….I could not still get over the heavy heart after watching the movie. Amir has shown it that it is not stardom…you need to create a niche for yourself…all that old clad that we used to talk about…Rajkapoor, Gurudutt…I guess he has a long way to go and hats of to him to create TZP.

I relate the entire sequence to me..my childhood…I never liked studies…because it was always imposed on me…I myself do not know how I got off the school and the college….but believe me..the inner strength is not made of always academics…

I have 3 children…two of them my own and one adoped….the adopted son is a carbon copy of me…he came to us as an angel when he lost both his parents and the trauma was heavy on his heart (he was only six when he lost his parents)…he is smart..he is agile but does not want to study…I relate each scene of the film with my life…We as parents often bully ourselves and when dont understand to tackle a situation, often become aggressive to cover up ourselves….

Its a while something has touched me so far…Kudos to Amir Khan productions

If I were to take up a social cause, I have decided that it would be children. Do let me know if anyone requires any kind of help for institutions or schools which I would be happy to become a member.

    Cheers once again
